Young Adults Ministry Advisory Board_Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the Apr. 17, 2013 Meeting of the Advisory Board for Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Covington

Michael Whelan, Rob Langenderfer, Sarah Hoeben, Karen Horstkamp, Liz Hall, Pierce Oka, Lauren Franzen, Sr. Cathy Bauer and Jamie Schroeder were present.

Isaak Isaak, Todd Barnett, Rev. John Sterling and Deacon Tom Duschney were absent.

Liz made a motion that the March meeting minutes be approved.  Sarah seconded and the motion carried.

Amanda Felix, Amy Campos, Annie Krause, Joe Tallarigo, Tony Wagner, Kevin Hoeben, Sarah Drew, Rachel Rottman, Robert Shearn, Tim McGilloway and Karen Gutzeit were nominated to be on the advisory board.

The bishop will be putting Fr. Lange on the young adult advisory board to replace Fr. Sterling.  A board member will talk to Fr. Lange about setting a date for a planning session for the upcoming year after all of the new board members have been chosen.

Todd wrote a letter of resignation from the board which was read.

Karen went to the Diocesan Pro Life Commission meeting at which Karen Riegler spoke about Crossing the Bridge for Life on June 2nd.  People will gather at 1:30 and the walk will begin at 3.  A variety of possible ways that we could help out with the walk were discussed.  The possibility of having business cards to hand out during the walk that promoted young adult ministry met with general approval.

There will be a Florence Freedom game on June 5th.

It was decided that we will do a canoe trip on June 23rd (for which people need to RSVP a week ahead) and a day trip to Carter Caves on July 20th.   It was also decided that we would attend the camping trip on Sept. 13-15th that Rachel Rottman is planning.

Other dates were decided on for when we would do other social and service activities.  They include June 20, July 2, July 17, Aug. 1, Aug. 13, and Aug. 28.

Devou Park is hosting concerts on July 6, Aug. 3 and Sept. 7.

Activities that were suggested for some of the above dates included a Reds game, a miniature golf night, a game night, a picnic, going to the Lawrenceburg speedway to ride go-carts, participating in HONK (Housing Opportunities for Northern KY), going to a church festival and going to Beltaro Casino.

The next young adult advisory board meeting will be on May 15th.

The final Mass before the summer will be at St. Patrick’s in Taylor Mill on May 30th and we will have a cookout at that time.

A number of  board members will meet at Cheddar’s on May 1st at 7 P.M. to finalize the summer schedule.                      Rob Langenderfer

Minutes for the Mar. 20, 2013 Meeting of the Advisory Board for Young Adult Ministry

Michael Whelan, Sarah Hoeben, Karen Horstkamp, Jamie Schroeder, Rob Langenderfer, Sr. Cathy Bauer, and Liz Hall attended.       Pierce Oka, Todd Barnett, Lauren Franzen, Isaak Isaak, Rev. John Sterling and Deacon Tom Dushney were absent.

We discussed the process of nominating new members for the board.

We will plan to have Sun. June 30th as a day to gather for Mass and then have a retreat/planning session for the board to plan events for the 2013-2014 academic year.  The new members will hopefully have been approved by the bishop by this time and be able to attend.

We talked about submitting material to The Messenger on young adult ministry.

Twitter and email are possibilities for spreading word about young adult activities besides Facebook.

Liz reported on the St. Gertrude’s 20somthings meeting she attended.

On Wednesday evenings during the summer Michael Whelan leads a discussion group at All Saints Church in Walton that is often very philosophical.

Theology on TAP is starting up on Thursday nights Apr. 11th and will go through May 16th.  It will be at Cancoun Restaurant on Montgomery Rd.

By the time of the next meeting, email biographies of potential new board members to Jamie so that they can be examined by the bishop.

Some different frequent social events (Reds game, King’s Island trip and other ideas) were brought up as possible activities and people are to bring concrete suggestions to next month’s meeting so that we can decide what ones we should do.

We briefly talked about the May cookout and Mass at St. Patrick Church in Taylor Mill.

We will meet at Graeter’s at 9:30 P.M. on Holy Thurs. (Mar. 28th) to carpool to pray  the steps.

Minutes of the Feb. 20, 2013 Meeting of the Diocese of Covington Advisory Board for Young Adult Ministry

Liz Hall, Karen Horstkamp, Michael Whelan, Isaak Isaak, Sr. Cathy Bauer, Pierce Oka, Lauren Franzen, and Rob Langenderfer attended.                                                                                                                                               Matt Steffen, Jamie Schroeder, Sarah Hoeben, Fr. John Sterling, Todd Barnett, and Deacon Tom Dushney were absent.

The board decided that we will socialize at the Crestview Hills Town Center after Mass at the new Thomas More College Chapel on Thurs. Apr. 25th.  We may go to a Reds game some time in June and possibly do a fish fry in Lent at some point as well as some other miscellaneous events over the summer.

In a discussion of the group’s online presence and online PR efforts, Michael noted that over the next few months Facebook posts and events will come from the Young Adult Ministry Facebook page and not the Young Adult Ministry Facebook group.  That will allow more people to see our events instantly rather than having to check the group.

It was announced that Fr. Sterling and Matt Steffen have indicated that they do not wish to continue on the board.

There was a lengthy discussion of new people who could be asked if they would like to serve on the young adult advisory board.  Isaak will contact Fr. Josh Lange to see if he would like to serve on the board.

Michael and Liz (and Sarah for her brother) will contact the people mentioned to see if they would like to serve on the board.   Lauren expressed her willingness to stay on the board until the board is stabilized with a number of good new members.

The Diocese will be having a major day-long event on Sept. 7th at Receptions to commemorate the Year of Faith.  Speakers will present on Vatican II and the Catechism.  Isaak is coordinating the event.

The upcoming Theology of the Body class was discussed.  Pierce Oka’s parents are involved with it and with the Couple to Couple League.  The Couple to Couple League sometimes has speakers.

It was discussed how the board should use its members’ connections to try to promote and latch on to events that are already happening, like the talks given with dinner by Msgr. Morris.

It was decided that the board would participate in Crossing the Bridge for Life on June 2nd at 1:30.  Karen will contact Faye Roach, head of the diocesan pro-life office, about that.

Sean Reynolds (head of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Youth and Young Adult Ministry office) will be invited to one of our future meetings (by Isaak) as will Sr. Leslie (by Liz).

Several members of the board will be going to the meeting of the St. Gertrude’s 20somethings on Thurs. Feb. 28th.  Many of these efforts are directed toward having the board learn from others’ experiences about how to coordinate young adult events successfully.

The NKU Newman Club is planning to have Fr. Shannon as a speaker in the spring.  Pierce will find out about those plans in more detail as well as plans in the fall for speakers.

Isaak discussed some ideas for fundraising for future young adult events.

Jamie has the email addresses for all of the secretaries and pastors of the churches of the diocese and will send out bulletin announcements to them that Liz will write and send to her about Masses.  Michael will handle getting announcements about Masses and group events up on the Facebook page.

Rob mentioned that he and Jamie had discussed articles that Rob had found on the Internet that talked about the place of young adults in the church and Rob passed out various articles to different board members to read.  He also brought up about the board reading some of Sons and Daughters of the Light and Connecting Young Adults to Catholic Parishes as part of their formation.  This will be discussed in greater depth at a future meeting, quite possibly with Jamie present, as by this point the February meeting had gone on for close to an hour and a half.

Oct. 17, 2012 Meeting of the Young Adult Advisory Board

Michael Whelan, Jessy Kirkwood, Rob Langenderfer, Karen Horstkamp, Sarah Hoeben, Todd Barnett, and Sr. Cathy Bauer attended.

The September meeting minutes were approved.

October Baby will be shown at St. Wallburg’s Monastery on Thurs. Oct. 25th from 7 to 9:30.  Advisory board members will get there at 6:30 to help set up.  Sr. Cathy will acquire signs that will indicate to attendees that they are in the right place and will direct them to the theater.  The group will publicize the film to their friends and market it heavily on the FB page.   There will be a brief introduction to the film and then a discussion of the movie afterwards.  Advisory board members will be emailed about what to bring in terms of snacks and drinks.  No snacks and drinks are allowed in the theater.  The question of working out a system of getting PR materials for future events to Jamie Schroeder for inclusion in The Messenger and/or bulletins was brought up, but no firm decisions were reached.

Masses for young adults have been confirmed for 7 P.M. on Nov. 15 at St. Joe’s in Cold Spring, Dec. 13 for Mary Queen of Heaven in Erlanger, Feb. 21st at St. Tim’s in Union,  Mar. 28th at St. Wallburg’s (at 7:30 with praying the steps to follow at 9), and May 30th at St. Patrick’s in Taylor Mill.  Rob will email Msgr. Neuhaus about having a Mass at the Cathedral on Jan. 10th.  (Update: Rob received a phone call from Msgr. Neuhaus later in the evening of Oct. 17th and he will contact him when he returns from Italy on Oct. 30th, but things initially appear promising for a January date.)  It was suggested that the Mass on April 25th be held at Thomas More College’s new chapel, and several members of the board have contacts there and will contact them about that.  St. Barbara’s was also suggested as a possibility for April’s Mass.  A discussion about stipends for the priests for Masses occurred, and Fr. Sterling will be contacted about protocol on that.

Lauren updated the web site, noting that it was under construction.  The Facebook diocesan young adult ministry page and a future web page were discussed as two separate things.  We will continue to keep the schedule of people posting on the Facebook page on a monthly basis with at least 4 posts throughout the month, and a general discussion occurred related to how to get more people to post on the page.

Michael will contact Jamie about some financial questions related to the group.

Rob talked about the possibility of Bible studies or classes that young adults could start up or attend in conjunction with the Year of Faith.  Sr. Cathy brought up the possibility of  bringing in a speaker, and it was suggested that the NKU Newman Club be contacted about that as they have brought in major speakers in the past (including Scott Hahn and Christopher West).  Rob will contact Bob Langenderfer, faculty advisor to the Newman Club, about that.

The March for Life is happening on January 24-25, and it was suggested that the advisory board leave on Thursday night and possibly spend the night of the 25th in Washington.

The Advisory Board for Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Covington was formed a few months ago to try to foster a greater sense of community  among Catholic young adults by organizing activities in the spiritual, social, and educational realms.  The board is also eager to help young adults groups already in existence and provide them with support to achieve their goals.                                                                      Does your parish have a young adult group?  If so, could you provide a few basic  details about it, including the name and email and phone number of the contact person?    If there is not a group, is there a person in your parish who has expressed an interest in starting a group?  If so, could please give his or her name and phone number and email?

Topic: ActionsDescription: https://webmail.covingtondiocese.org/owa/14.1.287.0/themes/resources/clear1x1.gif      In response to the message from Todd Barnett, Thu 10/20

The following would be my suggestions in terms of establishing Priorities/Goals for 2011-2012:

        A)       Priorities:

Ongoing development of young adult ministry programs on diocesan and parish levels, especially for

those young adults whose parishes do not offer on-going programs

Keep young adult ministry in the mind of the diocese and parishes – advocacy

Build up the programs that already exist

Get more people involved from different counties

Choose one achievable thing and dream big

Encourage young adults to have spiritual directors

Outreach/empowerment programs for parents to encourage their young adults

Establish a better working relationship with Catholic high schools and colleges in helping young adults

Establish relationships with different Financial Foundations who can support young adult ministry

 B)        Goals:

Increase involvement on board/committees by people from a broader range of parishes/counties

/groups

Hold a spiritual event for young adults

Hold a large event for young adults and their parents

Work with Financial Foundations who care about young adults to sponsor large events…

Divide the Board in three working committees, so that every member becomes a

 contributor:

       1.        Spiritual

       2.        Events

       3.        Advocacy

       C)        Focus on Immediate Pilgrimages, such as, 2013 World Youth Day in Rio De Janeiro

Meeting was opened with a prayer service led by Isaak.

Existing members of the Young Adult Commission introduced themselves as did the new members.  Isaak relayed the bishop’s wishes that we now be called the “Young Adult Advisory Board”

We discussed the possible missions of our board which may include:

·         Hosting events for Young Adults

·         Becoming the source for information for all young adult groups and happenings in the diocese.

·         Facilitating young adults becoming connected to the church and their parishes.

·         Enriching ourselves spiritually as a team.

Isaak brought a pamphlet outlining many of the classes that are available in the diocese for spiritual growth and learning about the faith.  (home.catholicweb.com/covingtonreligioused).  He also brought examples of the following documents that are available from the US Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCBPUBLISHING.ORG):

·         Sons and Daughters of the Light- A Pastoral Plan for Ministry with Young Adults

·         Renewing the Vision- Catholic Youth Ministry

Isaak also brought our attention to some upcoming events:  The November NCYAMA convention in Indianapolis (WWW.NCYAMA.ORG) and the 2013 World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro.

It was decided that we would meet monthly and we will try hard to keep our meetings to one hour.  Our next meeting will be Wednesday September 21st  .  at St. Walburg.

For the next meeting we will discuss the sample by-laws handed out by Isaak and propose any additions or subtractions.  We will discern the future leaders of the Board.  We will also begin to make a list of all parish and diocesan Young Adult groups.

We bid farewell to Nathan as he begins his new ministry in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.  He will be missed and we thank him for his friendship and positive energy during his years as a member of the Commission.  Michael has agreed to take over primary oversight of the Facebook page.

Paul invited everyone to hear him speak after the 7:15 p.m. mass Wednesday August 31st at the Holy Spirit Center, Norwood Ohio.   The meeting was closed with prayers led by Todd.

Respectfully Submitted,
